Surprisingly, this has as much to do with sisters as it does brothers. One major health issue that faces the female population is osteoporosis (a disease of the bone that leads to an increased risk of fracture). One in four women over the age of 50 has osteoporosis (Osteoporosis Canada). We all know that calcium is vital for bones, but, did you know that after your late 20s you will no longer be able to deposit calcium in your bones? You will have to work with what you have. As with everything, there is deterioration and due to the eventual lack of calcium, bones can become brittle and prone to fractures. So, what can we do? 1000 of calcium per day, or 3.5 cups of milk. This will help ensure adequate calcium deposition.
Strengthening ones bones can further be achieved through proper weight lifting. Together with the proper accumulation of calcium and building stronger bones through weight lifting, the chances of injuring and deterioration of bones drastically goes down and ensures you live a fracture free life, inshAllah.

For the brothers who are laughing, weight-lifting sisters is not as funny as you might think. The biggest health concern for most men is cardiovascular disease. It is the leading cause of death overall in North America, and “every 7 minutes in Canada, someone dies from heart disease or stroke” (Heart and Stroke Foundation). This can be improved through using commonsense lifestyle choices that include refraining from smoking and fatty foods. What is your recommended workout program? Aerobics. That’s right, aerobics. Sure you can pump your weights but brother you need to get some aerobic exercises. At least jogging. This ensures proper circulation and a strong heart.
Strange isn’t it, how our perception of exercise with gender biases is working against us. There is nothing manly or womanly about health. It is our responsibility to maintain our health. None of us wants to be dependent on someone else for everyday tasks. It seems important then, that we not wait for symptoms to strike us before we take action. Allocate some time daily and weekly for some physical activity and with the intention that you are doing it for the sake of Allah; he will reward you for it. How can you say no to that?
