The 9th of Dhu’l Hijjah is called the Day of Arafah since the pilgrims performing Hajj gather at the field Arafah to worship. It is one of the three central integrals of the Hajj rituals. Its importance is such that the Prophet (Peace and Blessing Upon Him/S.A.W) said, “Hajj is Arafah”.

Abu Qatada (Allah be pleased with him) related that the Messenger of Allah (S.A.W.) said, “Fasting the Day of Arafah [9thof Dhu’l Hijjah] expiates for two years, one prior and one forthcoming.” [Reported by Muslim, Abu Dawud, Nasa’i, and Ibn Majah]

Therefore, let’s all fast on this blessed day. We all sin and if this one fast can save us from the hellfire it’s a deal not worth missing out on. This year the Day Arafah will be November 15th, 2010 (if following Meccan Moon sightings) or November 16th, 2010 (if following local North American moon sighitngs).

Please note that this doesn’t mean we don’t ask for forgiveness for sins we committed the year before nor does it mean that we can commit sins for the year ahead.
