-We, at KIH, want to unite the Ummah with our content.
- We want to help youth who, like us, are born of two cultures.
We want to provide a safe area for them to build upon the cultural foundations they have inherited from their ancestors, without pressuring them to cling to it blindly.
- We want to empower youth to make decisions about their future that they can be proud of.
- We want to provide a comfortable environment where everyone is an equal and has the right to express an opinion.
- We want to bridge the gap between University and High School.
- We want to be a Halal means of entertainment for the Ummah by the Ummah.
- We want to showcase and endorse youth talent.
- We want to be a vivid part of the Muslim social scene.
And most importantly...
- We want to shatter stereotypes.

MEET THE EXECUTIVE TEAM
Vice President of Administration
My name is Rabia Khokhar and I am Keeping it Halal’s Vice President of Administration for 2012-2013! And I also hope to keep writing for KIH! I am in my fourth year at York University where I am doing a double major in Human Rights and Equity Studies and English. I am also doing my Bachelor of Education concurrently. I love the city life and can’t imagine living anywhere but Toronto. I love teaching, learning new things, reading, writing, talking, watching sunsets, annoying people, bracelets, taking pictures and stickers! Did I mention I love stickers?
I am so very happy to be part of Keeping it Halal’s team! And I hope to keep us all organized this year! I love that KIH is an outlet and platform for youth to express their talent in diverse ways such as through writing, photography and art. I believe that young people have very interesting and important things to say and God willing KIH will continue to provide opportunities to empower youth. I am so excited for the upcoming year and hope that you continue to visit our website (updated every Saturday) and come out to our future events!!
Thanks for reading and I hope you have a great day!! :D
Vice President of Finance
My name is Maryam Mughal and I will be your KIH Vice President of Finance for the year of 2012-2013. I hope to be the change for the betterment in any way possible either through my words or actions, be it major or minor.
Through my service to this campus group I will serve its members to the best of my ability by fulfilling my outlined and voluntary duties including advising members on the fiscal position of the club and preparing an event or annual
budget for the group as well as any fiscal reports as per requirement.
Otherthan focusing on my work and boring people by talking about it, I love the outdoors, camping, recycling and nature. I also enjoy various kinds of sports including basketball, badminton and any other physical activity that
gets the heart pumping! Reading, writing poems, watching documentaries, travelling, connecting to my roots and community in general, and understanding people are some of the things I’m interested in. I look forward to a progressive change and growth of this web-based initiative that this year may bring, Insha’Allah. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me at the following email: firstname.lastname@example.org. See you at our future events and meetings! Oh and don’t forget to read those amazing articles, by our writers, updated every Saturday. :)
Vice President of Web Development
I am Ibrahim. I am from Pakistan. Let me tell you a story. On 19th June 1991, at 9:47am, a squirrel got run over by a minivan on Underhill Dr., Toronto. But I had absolutely nothing to do with it. Around 20 years later, I first arrived in Canada to call it my new home.
It was an exciting time, I had recently graduated from American University of Sharjah with a bachelors in Mechanical Engineering but with no intention at all of working in that profession. After spending a few of months doing some unconventional things, I somehow ended up as a software engineer at a new web company, something that I actually like doing.
What I also like doing is going to the beach and listening to the calming sound of water. What I don’t like are stickers on fruits that are impossible to remove. I like to bike and explore nature on a nice summer day. I don’t like calling a customer support line where I have to wait for ages or answer a robot. The list goes on.
In Toronto, I missed the Islamic culture that I am used to and decided to become active in the Muslim community. Working at Keeping It Halal, ensha Allah I will contribute to building a stronger community of Muslim youth.
Vice President of Business Affairs
International Writing Director
My name is Imane Houzmali and I am going into my 3rd year at York University studying Business administration. I came to Canada for my undergraduate in 2010 after graduating from high-school in Morocco, Casablanca where I was born and raised until the age of 18. I speak four languages: Arabic, Moroccan Arabic, French and English. My silence gives the impression to people that I am quiet and reserved, but when I get used to you, you will see that I am a very talkative person. I love to travel and meet people from different nationalities. I am really thankful to the KIH team and for this great opportunity that has allowed me to meet Muslims from different backgrounds. I
find it really amazing to see how the youth are preserving their Islamic identities despite all the temptations that can exist in a non-Muslim country. I became a member of the team about a year ago when I became the first French
writer then promoted as the international writing director for KIH. However, I am currently serving as one of the French writers and the Vice-President of Business Affairs where my duties are determined by overlooking the activities of the Merchandising Director and the Talent Manager, and seeking out business to advertise on the KIH website. With the grace of God, I am willing to work hard for the benefit of KIH and make its work reach the height of excellence for our supporters.
JazakomAllah for your time.
Vice President of Promotions and Public Relations

fast tracker, try to keep up
My name is Hirra Sheikh. I am currently a third year student at York University majoring in Health Studies. I’ve been a Toronto resident since 1992, which begins with the day I was born. My parents are originally from Multan, Pakistan. I have had 2 conscious visits to the country, both of which have been fantastic experiences.
I love to write in general, especially pertaining to topics related to personal development, as well as current political and social structures in various areas of the world. I have particularly found growing up in Canada, having a Pakistani background, I’ve always been interested in how such factors become crucial determinants of how we mold and perceive our selves and are perceived by others. I usually write for personal ratification of social and religious constructs. I have recently written for The Muslim Voice Magazine as well, which runs under the umbrella of the University of Toronto’s Muslim Students Association. I’ve been a part of many Islamic events, which include the annual Reviving the Islamic Spirit and Journey of Faith conventions.
Aside from being a self-proclaimed bookworm, and a bit of a gym-rat, I also love ‘Family Time’: which includes quality social (and do NOT forget the eating) time with my exceptionally large direct and extended family.
looking for a better tomorrow today
My name is Saleha. I am currently completing an undergraduate degree at the University of Toronto Mississauga. Recently becoming involved with campus clubs has led me to acquire a greater understanding and appreciation for community work and involvement.
Always having a keen interest for law and international relations, my majors are in political science and criminology. I greatly enjoy reading and writing under these topics. In the process of becoming a better writer I always aim to stay updated with current social and political events, especially those that involve the Muslim community.
Learning about those less fortunate, along with years of travel, has also inspired me to include such sensitive but dire subjects in my research and writing process.
I strongly believe that we as a community must stay aware of the injustices around us, in order to collectively move towards a better society.
Writing short story fiction has always been a passion, and I hope to publish a novel some day, Insha-Allah (God willingly). I have faith that writing for Keeping It Halal and interacting with its readers will inspire me to reach this dream of mine.
Passionate about Islam and writing and writing about Islam!
Asalamulaikum, My name is Shahzad, I was born in 1990 in Lahore, Pakistan where I spent part of my childhood then moved to Mississauga where I've spent the past 7 years. Learning and writing about Islam and how it relates to our life today is something I'm very passionate about. Hopefully it reflects through my articles and my intention is for them to serve as a reminded for myself and other like me.
A bit about me: My name is Pernilla Khammar. I am called Esma by my Muslim friends and my husband’s family. I love to read and write in general, especially pertaining to topics related to personal development, as well as current political and social structures in various areas of the world. I have a blog: Journalofamuslimconvert.blogspot.com.
I have studied many languages: French, English, German, and Arabic. I am originally from Sweden and I am half Swedish, half Norwegian. I have studied economics but have to finish another year if I want to have my Bachelor of Science in Business and Economic.
I love living a healthy life, even though I also love chocolate, mint and liquorices. The most important thing in the world is my religion and my family. I am a
Muslim convert since 2000, before 911. My husband is from Tunisia. Our two children have emigrated with me to Tunisia (my husband has to work in Sweden). I am also curious about my origin that is why I am trying to do researches about my ancestors, which is really interesting.
University is a new experience for me, so it is too early to speak about any of the things going on here. Time will tell!
My name is Raihan Hussain. A high school student looking to expertise in the fields of journalism and social sciences.
